Hello Friends, hope your summer is going as well as possible in These Interesting Times.
We've started "back to school" here but we're still packing in some extra fun here and there.
I don't have enough links saved for neat categories so here's our random linkage for this installment:
- Things like this happening during the pandemic are fascinating and I imagine are going to inspire a lot of studies going forward: During Coronavirus Lockdowns, Some Doctors Wondered: Where are the Preemies? by Elizabeth Preston in The New York Times.
- Higher Education may not be a bubble bursting but more like a balloon with a slow leak. And the pandemic is not helping, obviously. So this caught my eye for several reasons, not least because according to the study, my state is one of the places in the most trouble: A Crisis is Looming for U.S. Colleges - And Not Just Because of the Pandemic from NBCNews.
- We owe it to the victims not to look away, but it's not easy reading: Jeffery Epstein Documents Have Been Released by Court Order. Read Them All Here from Law & Crime.
- Amy Mantravadi, who has written several historical novels, wrote this long, interesting post about Manhood, Womanhood, and Misogyny in 12th Century Europe.
- Until I stumbled on this, I had no idea that I've always wanted to see a ship's graveyard: The Ghosts of These Historic Ships Float On from Preservation Magazine.
- Made a mistake with money? Congratuations, you're human! This is an encouraging post: How to Recover After a Money Mistake - 7 Tips from Kristen at The Frugal Girl.
- I love this very much and cos-sign the philosophy: Against Textbooks: Why We Need Bigger Stories by Joy Clarkson at Mere Orthodoxy.
- Where Did the Different Birthstones Originate and Why are Certain Birthstones for Certain Months? Answered by The Old Farmer's Almanac. (Short answer: astrology and the priests in the Old Testament. Quite a mashup!)
- An older post from June that didn't really make me lol, more like "chuckle wryly and sigh" Would You Rathers for Parents During Quarantine from McSweeney's Internet Tendency.
From Living Unabridged
I know a lot of people are considering or choosing to homeschool this fall due to current events. If this is you or you know someone who might be encouraged by one of these older posts, please share. It's going to be OK and yes, you can do this!
