May is cuh-razy 'round here. We've got birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, recitals, picnics, weddings, and more, OH MY.
But online reading happens too, so on to the links!
Learning
- Shed Those Shoes: Being Barefoot Helps Brain Development by Rae Pica. I love having my natural predilections affirmed. *insert smiley wink here*
- Counting the Days from Realistically Speaking. Helpful reminder to homeschool parents.
- Homeschoolers on Instagram talk a lot about collecting and curiosity cabinets. But this is a level beyond: An Artist's Beautiful Obsession with Cabinets of Curiosity from Messy Nessy Chic.
- Relevant to our interests: A Dorothy L. Sayers Primer: The Woman Behind the Essay by Lindsey School for CiRCE.
Living
- Raising Boys in a #metoo World by Mary Haseltine. I loved this post.
- Two posts about racial reconciliation: Mike Leake's take - Why Racial Reconciliation Requires More Than Gospel Proclamation. And Why You Should Teach Your Kids About Racial Reconciliation by Jarvis Williams and Curtis Woods.
- And now for a subject that's been on my mind a lot: hospitality. I've saved no less than four posts about it recently: Rosaria Butterfield - Christian Hospitality is Radically Different from Southern Hospitality; Brandon McGinley at Mere Orthodoxy - Stop Making Hospitality Complicated; The Art of Simple - 5 Simple Hacks to Take the Stress Out of Hospitality; and Mystie Winkler - How to Have People Over for Dinner Without Losing Your Cool. I think some personality types are more apt to get this wrong than others. And I think that Christians have frequently confused entertaining with hospitality. That said, I'm happy to see so many people dealing with this issue.
Loving
- I've been doing a lot of reading about Thomas Jefferson (and his family) lately, so this caught my eye: See Monticello's Previously Off Limits Floors for the First Time from Conde Nast Traveler.
- As part of "The 19%" this made sense to me: Fear, Nostalgia, and Power, Eric Miller interviews John Fea at Religion Dispatches.
- Sometimes when I write "lol", I mean more like, "I smiled when I read this." In this case, I really did Laugh Out Loud: The Diary of a Settler of Catan from McSweeney's. (We love us some Catan around here, so this is meant as good natured teasing.)
- Yes, You Really Can Collect View-Masters and Yes, This Woman Has Nearly All of Them from Gizmodo. Includes video.
