I know blogging has been back-burnered a lot lately, but I'm still here and here are a few {or a lot of} links I've saved {fairly} recently:
Learning
- Dear Mom Who Wants to Give Her 5 Year Old a Classical Education by Mystie at Simply Convivial. Important post!
- I don't necessarily agree with 100% of this post (although I could say that about every link I share), but I found this encouraging and thought-provoking: You Don't Need a Writing Curriculum from Not So Formulaic.
- Speaking of not needing curriculum: Most Science Curriculum is Quite Useless by Purva Brown (The Classical Unschooler).
- Another Classical Unschooler post: Time Spent in School Does Not Equal Learning
- Are You Brave Enough to Homeschool? by Erin Vincent at Simple Homeschool.
- I love the KJV but things like this have to be pointed out: False Friends and Dead Words by Jake Mailhot. A good pastor will point these out to his congregation. Read with understanding! (The quiz he shares is fun too.)
- Why Don't We Talk About Anne Bronte More Often? By Ashley Anthony at Fathom Mag.
Living
- How to Make Your Home More Lovely for $0 by Kristen at The Frugal Girl
- Swedish Death Cleaning and The Anorexic Home by Mireille Silcoff. First came "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up", now along comes the Swedish take on decluttering. I think as long as we develop our discernment that allows us to take the wisdom from these pop-culture phenomena, it's fine. But I also think it shows a deep inadequacy about homemaking that makes us buy these books in such numbers that they become bestsellers.
- Creating Homes of Beauty by Lindsey Brigham Knot for CiRCE. "A home is to the family what the body is to the soul..."
- Moms Have Always Worked. Just Ask the Puritans. by Hannah Nation for CT.
- Thought-provoking: Against Child Missionaries by Samuel James at Letter and Liturgy.
- Why Jewish Kids Don't Have Peanut Allergies by Stephen McAlpine. Interesting theory.
- Racial Reconciliation: What We (Mostly, Almost) Agree On, And What We (Likely) Still Don't Agree On by Kevin DeYoung. I found this helpful in sorting out some the recent controversies in the Christian community about these matters.
Loving
- Inside Southwest Flight 1320, 20 Minutes of Chaos and Terror. Reporting in the New York Times. Two things: 1, this is terrifying. And 2, Tammie Jo Shultz deserves every honor we can give her.
- A post about Hamilton and C.S. Lewis? I love it when two of my favorites meet! How 'Hamilton' Reveals C.S. Lewis's 'Inner Ring' by Kelly Keller at TGC.
- In all the recent news about Billy Graham, I also enjoyed this look at his wife: A Celebration of Spitfire Women by Whitney Putnam at Fathom Mag.
- Fascinating but sad: Arthur Miller's Missing Act by Suzanna Andrews at Vanity Fair.
- When Twenty-Six Thousand Stinkbugs Invade Your Home by Kathryn Schulz in The New Yorker. These things are a modern plague. (A few summers ago before we moved into our new house and we were renting we had a stinkbug invasion similar to, but not quite as bad, as the one described in the article.)
- Long but incredibly interesting article, if you enjoy archeology or history: In Sudan, Rediscovering Ancient Nubia Before It's Too Late by Amy Maxmen.
- Fun little post about G.K. Chesterton's marking up a book: We Need Counter-Cultural Common Sense shared by Trevin Wax.
- A Guide to the Music of Andrew Peterson by Trevin Wax. My most favorite living Christian singer-songwriter.
