Think "education" is a twelve or sixteen year process?
Mortimer J. Adler's The Paideia Proposal: An Educational Manifesto disagrees.
Another quote that made it into my commonplace book:
Education is a lifelong process of which schooling is only a small but necessary part.
"Further learning" or "lifelong process", either way describes what education is truly supposed to be.
You do not stop growing and learning simply because you graduated high school. And attending school is actually no guarantee that learning is happening.
Schooling must prepare you to do further learning on your own. That's education.
What I'm Reading Now:
My stack is starting to get out of hand with non-fiction. I hope some of the novels I've ordered from the library come in soon!
Recent additions to my stack:
1.The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mindby Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.
2.The Connected Child: Bring Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Familyby Karyn Purvis, David Cross, and Wendy Sunshine. These two books were recommended by Mary Ostyn in her book Forever Mom.
We're not an adoptive family but I've found the advice to be applicable to nearly any family (and I also like to keep up with counseling strategies).
3.True Paradox: How Christianity Makes Sense of Our Complex Worldby David Skeel.
4.Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Contentby Ann Handley. I'm always watching for books about writing and ways to improve my own writing ability.
5.Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good: A Memoir of Food and Love from an American Midwest Familyby Kathleen Flinn. Picked this one up at the library on a whim.
Recently finished:
Now you can find an updated list of the books I've finished this year on this page: Books of 2015
Recent Kindle additions:
Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet: Tasting the Goodness of God in All ThingsI picked up this highly recommended book when it was only $0.99. (It's $2.80 today, which is still a steep discount.) Haven't read it yet.
The Artful Marketer: A Fundamental Business Guide for Creative EntrepreneursAnother one I picked up at a steep discount.
Alone With God: Rediscovering the Power and Passion of PrayerThis was a free Kindle deal a few days ago. (It's currently $2.51) I've started reading through this in the mornings after I read my Bible.
Notes from a Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic WorldI know several book bloggers who loved this one last year and at $0.99, I snatched it up. Haven't read it yet, but it's still $0.99 today, so if you've been interested in this title now is the time to buy it.
Current Read Aloud:
Still working on The Smuggler's Treasure. She's still enjoying it.
We also picked up this picture book at the library:
Hank Has a Dream. We loved the first picture book about Hank. It was wordless, and this one has some text, but the illustrations are still adorable.
Current Book to Review:
Make it Happen: Surrender Your Fear. Take the Leap. Live On Purpose.is supposed to be on its way to me, but it hasn't arrived yet.
I have Notes from a Blue Bike and Everything Bitter on queue too.
I love that idea of prepping faculties in students for future learning. So important.
