We still have eight kids instead of our usual six, so blogging has definitely been pushed down on the priority list. But I have managed to keep up with some reading, so here are the links that have caught my eye since our last edition.
Learning
- 12 Ways to Be a Curious Person by Barnabas Piper. Done! (Kidding, a little.)
- Reading Out of Love for Others by Tim Challies. I loved this! So often reading is apologized for (especially by women), as if we should be doing something "better" with our time. Or reading is described as a "solitary pursuit". Reading is more than that!
- What is a Classic Anyway? On Hemingway and the 100 Year Rule by Adam Andrews at CiRCE Institute. Great quote: "Our problem is not that the jury is still out on Hemingway; our problem is that the jury is in—with a verdict of guilty...our anxiety about twentieth-century literature has its roots in faulty philosophies of reading, art, and education." Definitely a lot to ponder in this essay!
- Here's a question somewhat related to the above: What Makes a Great Christian Novel? by Andrew Peterson at The Rabbit Room. And here's a question that I've been asking myself, since I want to write a series of novels: do I have to write something great? What if the pressure of writing something great is keeping me from writing?
Living
- On Making Friends and Partial Solutions by Tsh Oxenreider at The Art of Simple. One thing I've learned about adult friendship in the past few years: once I stopped looking for my perfect friend, I started having more friendships. None of them are ALL I would dream of in a friend. But they are all precious to me in their own ways.
- Why Your Risk for Divorce is Probably Lower Than You Think by Glenn T. Stanton. I appreciate this breakdown of the numbers we seen thrown around so often.
- Energy Management By Personality Type by Brandy at Afterthoughts. I've appreciated Brandy's series on low-energy motherhood and this may have been my favorite entry in the series.
- 5 Tips for an Introvert Homeschool Mom by Mystie at Simply Convivial. (Side note: you can see some of my thoughts on this subject in this post: Introvert Mom Surrounded By Children.)
- Faithfulness in the Age of Trump by Trevin Wax. Helpful thoughts.
- The Real Reason P*rno Shops Don't Have Windows, a John Piper message shared by Justin Taylor. Another example of perishing for want of wonder!
Loving
- This 3,500 Year Old Tomb Upended What We Thought We Knew About the Roots of Western Civilization by Jo Marchant at Smithsonian. (H/T to Brandy for this one!) Not only is this interesting because of the history, but the discovery was made by researchers from the University of Cincinnati. So, naturally, I feel some ownership here. *cough*
- Sorry, Neil deGrasse Tyson, But We've Done Amazing Things Since the Moon Landing by David Harsanyi. I watched part of this drama play out on Twitter and it was hilarious (and kind of sad, really).
- It's Not Okay for You to Pass Judgment on How Many Kids I Have by Casandra Chesser at The Federalist. SO SAY WE ALL.
- The Women's March Should Welcome Pro-Life Women by Gracy Olmstead at The Federalist. I keep hearing that the women's march was "inclusive" and "non-partisan". Not so much, as it turns out.
- And, on a lighter note (and because we're coming up on the 20th anniversary of the 1st movie Philip and I saw in a theater together (Empire Strikes Back) I share: The Star Wars Special Editions Remain a Crucial Milestone 20 Years Later from io9.
