Weekend Web Wandering - October 31, 2015
We're doing the great "get beds ready for winter" thing today, which involves washing bedding and making sure everyone has enough blankets on their beds. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it inevitably is in a family our size. For instance, I know we have exactly four twin size white blankets for the girls' beds. Guess how many I've found?
Three.
I'm a fairly organized person and I've looked everywhere a twin size blanket might be and yet: three, not four.
Stuff like this drives me nuts.
But enough about my life, let's get to the linkage:
Learning
- I didn't any many education / homeschooling links this week but I did find this interesting: John Singer Sargent Reveals the Private Lives of the Rich and Famous by William Newton. I'm filing this information away for a future artist study.
Living
- Bandersnatch: Explore Your Unconventional Soul by Erika Morrison at The Art of Simple. Surprisingly deep questions here.
- Teenagers Aren't Gremlins: Break the Rules from Tressays. Tressa continues writing helpful advice about parenting teenagers. (Somewhat related is my post: 3 Simple Ways to Save a Bad Day.)
- Today While I Folded Laundry... by Heather Sanders. "Stop stealing from yourself" is a message most moms need to hear (and maybe some dads, too).
- 3 Prayers We Need to Stop Saying by Todd Lesher at Relevant. I wasn't sure where he was going with this at first, but I like where it ended up.
- My husband sent me this one: What to Do When Your Dream Job Makes You Miserable by Willow Belden.
Loving
- The Transformation of David Brooks by Danny Funt for Columbia Journalism Review. I found this interesting, possibly because I have Brooks'The Road to Character
in my reading stack right now.
- We're Already a Cradle to Grave Welfare State by Sean Saffron at The Federalist. Sobering.
- Tim Challies addresses the recent Canadian election in I Went Away for Just 6 Days... Great reminders for Christians here.
- Buy the Product, Not the Sob Story by Leah Wise for CT. Inspirational but also practical.
- Why Yelp Restaurant Reviews Aren't Trustworthy by Ellie Bufkin in The Federalist. This line jumped out at me: "When your clientele becomes the type of people looking for problems, it becomes nearly impossible to take care of them." I think this has applications wider than just restaurants. (My mind immediately went to churches.)
- A Note of Sanity About Halloween by Joe McKeever at American Family Association. My friend Dawn shared this one earlier this week.
- And finally, this one made me laugh: Halloween with a Toddler: Fact Vs. Fiction from Honest Toddler.
On Living Unabridged this week:
Last year I finished up my 31 Authors Children Love series and shared some recommended books for November:
- What to Read in November
- 31 Authors Children Love: Michael Rosen
- 31 Authors Children Love: Maurice Sendak
- 31 Authors Children Love: Martin Waddell
- 31 Authors Children Love: Lynd Ward
- 31 Authors Children Love: Mo Willems
- 31 Authors Children Love: Miriam Young
- 31 Authors Children Love: Gene Zion
