I love reading Spurgeon. He hits theological depths but never loses his sense of humor. And, his preaching (writing) continues to be surprisingly accurate and yes, relevant, even a hundred and twenty-five years after his death:
I'm slow reading An All Round Ministry and, he's slowly filling my commonplace book. This book is sermons given to his fellow ministers and students, but I think any Christian would appreciate it.
Recently Finished
Into the Water: A Novel by Paula Hawkins. Hawkins, of Girl on the Train fame, essentially writes terrible people thinking, saying, and doing terrible things. She writes well (although I could do without the cursing), but it doesn't change the fact that there is never anyone to root for in her novels. I've seen criticism of this book because of how many character viewpoints she uses, but I didn't find that hard to follow. I did find myself hoping they'd just all end suitably punished, though, and {spoiler} some are and some aren't. If you liked the UK series Broadchurch, you might like this. Otherwise, it doesn't have a lot of redeeming features.

Another suspense novel: The Child by Fiona Barton. Somehow I ended up bringing home several new British suspense novels. Haven't started this one yet, though. (Needed a breather after Into the Water!)
I have already read the first few chapters of Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries. Nonfiction by Kory Stamper. I have started this one, and let's face it, a memoir by someone who works for Merriam-Webster is definitely my cup of tea.
Current Read Aloud
We're a few chapters in to Johnny Tremain (we have a different edition than the one pictured, but I couldn't find ours on Amazon.) After reading about Nat Bowditch and now Johnny Tremain my girls asked, "Did anyone grow up with their mom and dad in old times?"
Fair question, I think.

I have Brook McGlothlin's Gospel-Centered Mom, but I've barely cracked it open yet.
Current Kindle Deals
The Eric Metaxas Bonhoeffer biography is $2.99 for Kindle in October. I doubt I'll ever stop recommending that particularly book.
There are probably some more great deals since it's the start of a new month, but frankly, I don't have time to wade through all the dreck today. I'll check again next week.
