31 Authors Children Love: Ruth Krauss

Of all the books we own by Ruth Krauss, I think this one is our favorite:

This book of definitions will ring true to any child.

My children love the elaborate drawings by Sendak. Several of these "definitions" have entered our family lexicon.

You'll find some familiar illustrators worked with Krauss.

People like Crockett Johnson (her husband):
The Carrot Seed is such a classic, we have more than one copy. (We keep a board book copy for the youngest family members.)

And Maurice Sendak (already mentioned with A Hole is to Dig):
Open House for Butterflies is a companion to Hole is to Dig. We have a copy that includes both books.

This Ruth Krauss book has been reissued with new, gorgeous illustrations:

I love this book, and I almost chose it as our favorite. The rhythm is gentle, much like Goodnight Moon, and the art is good enough to display on its own.

Others books by Krauss:

I'll Be You and You Be Me. Another imaginative collaboration between Krauss and Sendak.

The Happy Day

I Can Fly. Part of the classic Little Golden Books collection.

The Growing Story. Newly updated with illustrations by Helen Oxenbury.

and there are many more.
