Words on Wednesday - What We Want Our Children to Learn

quote from Awaking Wonder by Sally Clarkson.

(Obviously, I can't know exactly what images of me my children will take with them as they grow up, but I suspect they will all remember me sitting in my chair or on my bed surrounded by books and papers.)

Currently Reading

Fiction: nothing. Recently finished Miss Graham's Cold War Cookbook (not a fan), but I have too many other things to read to start another novel just yet.
Nonfiction: I have no fewer than four (FOUR!) nonfiction titles started right now (2 print, 2 Kindle). This is too many, even for me, but sometimes library holds come in all at once and these things happen, I guess. I'll single out Reading While Black by Esau McCaulley for mention this week.
Bible: Rejoice with me, friends, today I finished reading through the Bible again. I read through The ESV Global Study Bible this time around. Next up: American Standard Version.
Devotional: New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp. (Get used to seeing this here, because it's a year long thing.)
Theology: Living in the Kingdom of God by Sigurd Grindheim.
Practical: I don't have a parenting or homeschooling title right now. So I'll use this spot to mention A Church Called Tov by Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer. (This is one of the four I mentioned above.)
Classic: Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. I have a feeling this is going to be here a while too. I made a bit of progress on it this past week. ("Just can't seem to get any forward-er," as someone once said.) I kind of wish my edition didn't have footnotes. I LOVE footnotes and annotations in nonfiction but they are so distracting in fiction to me. (Exception: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, where I loved the footnotes very much.)
Read Aloud: The 10 year old and I are reading The White Stag by Kate Seredy. It's our first book by Seredy, although we own others that we haven't gotten around to yet. This relates to our History studies this year. So far we like it, but neither of us love it. It's quite short so we'll have to start another book soon.
Audiobook: The Inimitable Jeeves BBC audio drama. Perfect for while we're doing the laundry sorting and folding. My 16 year old is enjoying this with me. (The younger crew are around but don't really catch it all yet.)

Things the boys have listened to lately

  • Jonathan Park Goes to the Aquarium (The girls received several Jonathan Park sets as gifts when they were younger and the boys recently found them.)
  • Jonathan Park Goes to the Zoo (These are not my favorite thing in the world, honestly. But the boys seemed to like them well enough to endure "Quiet Time" with them.)
  • The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. (They just started this one and they like it pretty well with one major drawback: the CDs are slightly longer than an hour apiece and Quiet Time is only supposed to be an hour and anything more is cruel and unusual punishment, possibly a violation of the Geneva Protocol. Lawyers may need to be consulted. Don't let anyone tell you girls are more dramatic than boys.)

So, what are you reading now?
