Words on Wednesday - Writing is Like Parenting

How writing is like parenting:
writing is like parentingthis quote is from Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Contentby Ann Handley.

I had to take this book back to the library before I could finish it but it was extremely practical and helpful, and I've already ordered it again.

Everyone has an opinion about writing, even those who don't write. Which reminds me of one of my favorite Jane Austen quotes:

I must keep to my own style and go on in my own Way.

There's only one Jane Austen, of course, but each writer really needs to go on in their own way while remembering some of the basic "rules" of writing.

(One thing I believe about writing: you have to know the rules in order to break them. There's a difference between knowingly breaking a "rule" and being sloppy because you didn't know there was a rule.)

What I'm Reading Now:

Recent Additions:

The Fantasy Fallacy: Exposing the Deeper Meaning Behind Sexual Thoughtsby Shannon Ethridge. Picked up because of the current "50 Shades" fascination that just can't be avoided right now.
The Art of the English Murder: From Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes to Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcockby Lucy Worsley. This one just sounded like something I would love to read.

I recently had to return without finishing The Martian: A Novel as well as Everybody Writes. Sometimes I think people who live around here are reading my blog and ordering the books in my stack. (I'm kidding, of course, but it is funny to think about.)
