Words on Wednesday – Remarkable Reading

Today’s quote about “remarkable reading” comes from a book about words themselves:
remarkable reading
From the conclusion of Kory Stamper’s Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries.

English is a remarkable (and frustrating) language that makes for remarkable reading

Word by Word is part memoir, part…I don’t know. Behind the scenes look at how libraries are born, maybe?

Anyway, I found it completely fascinating. If you love words and reading, then you might as well. (Warning: Stamper does occasionally use or discuss curse words.)

Recently Finished

Besides the aforementioned, I also finished The Child by Fiona Barton. Twisty and tense. (But not too tense.) British present day suspense novel a la, “The Girl on the Train.” Possibly unreliable narrators. Some less than likeable characters.

This one had more likeable characters and less bad language than Paula Hawkins uses, so I liked it better. Plus, {here be spoilers} it had a satisfying ending. (I admit it: I like things mostly tied up. Ambiguous endings can sometimes work but I find them mostly frustrating.)

Recently Added

I’m due to hit the library and replenish my stack. The only things still in my stack are spiritual slow reading. (Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship, Spurgeon’s An All Round Ministry, and a copy of The Oxford Book of Common Prayer)

Current Read Aloud

Johnny Tremain. I know I’ve read this before but I remember very little about it. So I’m surprised along with the girls as we read it. (And no, I’m not attempting a Boston accent. I know my limits. Even though I love to do accents.)

Current Book to Review

Gospel Centered Mom by Brooke McGlothlin. This one keeps getting pushed aside but now that my reading stack has disappeared maybe I’ll get it finished.

Current Kindle Deals

You can get a Kindle edition of Spurgeon’s An All Round Ministry (mentioned above) for just $0.99. I’m reading a paperback edition, so I can’t speak to the quality. But hey, 99¢!
Savor by Shauna Niequist is $1.99 this month. (You can check out my review.)
The Dark Tower and Other Stories by C.S. Lewis is $1.99 right now.
The Colson Way, another book I’ve reviewed, is $3.99 for Kindle.
The Big Book of Homeschool Ideas and Book 2 are each $0.99 right now.

Are you reading anything remarkable right now?
