September makes me think about going back to school and it marks the seasonal change from summer to fall.  And fall, of course, means cozy days, curled up with a good book.

What to Read in September:

Fiction:Goodbye, Mr. Chips by James Hilton is a portrait of a teacher in an English school for boys. Critics have been known to call this one sentimental but I don't see that as a bad thing, especially not the way Hilton wrote it.

Non-Fiction:Howards End Is on the Landing: A Year of Reading from Home by Susan Hill. This is a memoir about reading and books. (And I have to confess: memoirs based on reading are my favorite, although memoirs about food come a close second. That will be a recommendation for another month.)

Children's Book:The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: The Mysterious Howlingby Maryrose Hill. Miss Penelope Lumley is a graduate of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females and a new governess to three children rescued from the woods. Adventures ensue, of course. This series is one of our new favorites. This would make a great read-aloud or you might enjoy the audio version. These books are somewhat reminiscent of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" series, but I think these are actually better.
